Whether taking a long stroll or a short walk along a wooden, stone or paved path, river walks are a draw to residents and tourists for everything from picnicking and people watching to bike riding and fishing. In fact, river walks are so popular in many cities that, budget cuts aside, they are building multi-mile extensions. Over the last year, the Blue Water Young Professionals (BWYP) have been hard at work with community partners creating a vision and long term plan to shape, enhance and breathe new life into the riverfront along the Black River. The Black River Walk project is broadly described as a public spaces plan for “creative placemaking” through the development of a ten block stretch of land along the Black River, redefining this space as a cultural destination. This creative placemaking project will transform a rather barren strip of river walk with public art pieces, gathering places, and in the future visual and performing art experiences. Our focus is on developing quality-of-life amenities for the Blue Water Area. According to Next Generation Consulting, the next generation has a “Live first, work second” mentality. Unlike their parents, these young professionals do not simply follow the paycheck or the company. Often, they first pick a place to live, and then find a job. Their survey of over 50,000 young professionals found that U.S. cities must develop and emphasize the quality-of-life amenities, i.e. the arts, public parks and trails, a strong after-5 scene, that attract the next generation.
Over the last year, the Blue Water Young Professionals (BWYP) have been hard at work with community partners creating a vision and long term plan to shape, enhance and breathe new life into the riverfront along the Black River. Their survey of over 50,000 young professionals found that U.S. cities must develop and emphasize the quality-of-life amenities, i.e. the arts, public parks and trails, a strong after-5 scene, that attract the next generation.

The BWYPs have joined with all facets of the community to liven up and add quality-of-life amenities to our beautiful and fun downtown. Our city is fortunate enough to have extensions and enhancements happening concurrently on two river walk projects in our downtown area.“Our city is fortunate enough to have extensions and enhancements happening concurrently on two river walk projects in our downtown area.” With the St. Clair Community Foundation’s habitat restoration along the St. Clair River on Desmond Landing and the BWYP’s leading efforts for the enhancement and branding of the Black River Walk, we have a lot to look forward to along our waterfronts

Key to the project is our maritime heritage. Vantage Point Maritime Center, the historic Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, the Huron Lightship, the annual Mackinac Sailboat Race, and many other maritime attractions are well known in our area. This maritime heritage will be the anchoring theme of all the visual elements of the Black River Walk project. Main components to the Spring 2013 phase of the project are: useable public art, like the bike racks and benches in contest right now, archways signifying the beginning and end of the river walk, picnic tables painted vibrantly with maritime stories and an additional fire pit.
